What should I do to prepare for a networking event?

June 2, 2009 (7:00 am) By: Ms. Moxie

Promoting yourself and your business can take some work. Preparing for networking events in advance can help you feel more relaxed and ready to market yourself. You’ll show up calm, cool and collected.

Here are some tips that will help you arrive prepared:

  • Know where the event is. Print out directions and a phone number before leaving for the event.
  • Bring a purse or a jacket so you can always have your business cards with you.
  • Bring more business cards than you think you’ll need in a clean, neat case. If you can find one with two compartments, keep one for your cards and the other spot for the ones you collect throughout the event.
  • Dress professionally and refresh yourself before entering. Comb your hair, reapply makeup, brush your teeth and if you’re a smoker, try not to smoke right before the event.
  • If appropriate, bring brochures or small selling tools to leave for future customers.
  • Bring 2 working pens and a small notepad.
  • Bring mints. Enough said.
  • Have a goal in mind. How many potential clients do you want to meet? Know who would be the best contacts for you before arriving. Prepare a very simple, short statement about what you can offer people you meet.

Most importantly, show up with a positive attitude and enthusiasm to be there. It will make the most lasting impression!
