Back Story is way to help you get to know your fellow Moxie members at a deeper level. Often, when we know someone’s backstory, we feel drawn to them on an emotional level that can’t always be tapped at a Mixer event. I feel such delight at uncovering the treasure that lies within someone’s story, which they often think is “normal” or “ho-hum.” At each Mixer event, I will tell a Back Story – of a local member, or one who lives across the country. I hope these stories will encourage you to find out more about our members by visiting the directory.
Our very first Back Story Member Spotlight shines a light on the amazing work one of our members does, and the amazing life that’s led her there.
Have you met Crystal King?
Crystal is a long-time member of Women with Moxie. I’ve talked to her many times at mixers, and caught up with her recently for an in-depth conversation.
Crystal is a representative for Arbonne, a 38-year old certified vegan health and wellness company. Established in Switzerland, Arbonne makes a healthy, non-toxic version of practically everything you can put on or in your body, and every product lives up to the highest standards of the EU’s health and wellness regulations.
For Crystal, working for Arbonne is a win, win, win, win: her clients win, she wins, her company wins, and the environment wins! She is passionate about helping women select health and beauty products without parabins, human and animal by-products (yes, really!), mineral oil, and petroleum products.
What motivates Crystal to do this work?
Crystal had a traumatic childhood on the East Coast. Having substance abusers as parents meant that she was a forgotten kid who fell through the cracks. She remembers police raids in the house in the middle of the night on many occasions.
These days, Crystal doesn’t watch the news or violent movies. She’s lived through a ton of violence as a child, so she doesn’t need to see more violence on TV or in the theater. She has gone through a lot of PTSD healing, and now has two children: a 27-year-old son and a 21 year old daughter. Her son just got out of the Air Force and is married. Her daughter is autistic, which offers a unique challenges that Crystal handles beautifully.
Crystal is planning to create a children’s foundation for kids who are like she was: falling through the cracks, without the care and support they need and deserve. A place where children can get help and mentoring; where they won’t have to decide between keeping themselves safe and keeping their families together. This foundation will teach all the practicalities of life, including how to cook, to clean house, how to apply to college, get a job, deal with money, and so on. She is currently incorporating and utilizing ideas to help bring all sorts of existing agencies together so that there can be comprehensive, holistic care for kids who need it the most.
Crystal would like to send a message to women:
“To any woman starting her own business: always first and foremost love yourself. Show up and be the real authentic you. As women, we are the hardest critics on ourselves. You would never let another human talk to you like you often talk to yourself.” She says, “You are responsible for your life and for your business and for your reactions in the world, so you have to take care of yourself!”
Crystal loves to cook and bake, and is currently working on a cookbook of healthy recipes. She hopes to have it published by Christmas of 2018. Proceeds from her cookbook will benefit her non-profit.
Thank you, Crystal, for shining such a bright light in your family, your community, and our Moxie network. Your stories, wise words, and aspirations are deeply inspiring. You are undeniably a woman with Moxie!
