Are you a secret agent or a carnival barker? Do you ever get the feeling that you show up at social engagements, professional meetings, or networking events and you are so dialed in to the script running in your own head you hardly remember or notice what anyone else is saying? Or you’re so afraid your opinion, idea or service will be rejected that you become a smiling, nodding, mute? I’ve been there.
When I first started in sales I would go to networking event to sell my product, to share my pitch, to spew my latest offer to anyone who would glance my way… and I hated it. It rarely worked, stressed me out beyond belief and never seemed to lead to lasting connections. Then I found a way to do it all differently. Something that changed how I interacted with people for good. Would you like to know what it was? I mean, wouldn’t it be nice if you could just show up to any social or business function and just enjoy the moment? What if I guaranteed you deeper and longer lasting connections without having a script at all?
When I first started out as a hypnotherapist & life coach, like many of you, I was also working a full time job in a seemingly unrelated field.Luckily, I had found a renewed sense of confidence and an appreciation for my story during my training to become a hypnotherapist. Which allowed me to see the value in being authentic in every situation. As I mentioned above, I found a way to connect on a totally new level. That’s when I began to show up – in my work environment – as a hypnotherapist & life coach. It was who I was and I used every skill, talent and technique I had as I managed clients, negotiated with vendors and even helped rebuild a company after my employer drove it to financial ruin & was hauled away in handcuffs. With every interaction I did the best I could with the tools I had to be of service. Each time I did I created deep and lasting rapport with the people inside and outside of the company. That rapport allowed me to help negotiate a deal to save our company along with the jobs of my fellow employees. I knew then if I trusted my inner voice, spoke my truth, and sought to serve others I could create a positive ripple effect with every single connection.
The trick to creating these powerful connections? Be authentic. People want to feel connected to each other. They want to belong to a tribe of people who’s values and strengths support their own. When you trust your own story and build rapport via honest communication when you meet someone you’ll have created a lasting connection. The key is not to seek instant gratification. Don’t waste your energy or time determining in advance which person in the room can or will provide you with something or buy something from you. Even if you manage to make a sale the interaction will be short lived. Instead show up eager to share your true self and make lasting connections. Ask about people’s real passions, special interests and seek genuine input in the conversation. The elevator speech, promotional piece stashed in your pocket or purse, even your business card will have less value than a genuine conversation that let’s people know who you are and what they can expect of you.
When I stood up for my fellow employees, as the US Marshall’s hauled our boss away, they found out what mattered to me. They had no doubt what I stood for. I was young, in my early 20’s, and many of the other employees were much older than me but I pushed to get everyone paid, the business re-opened, and the customer served – withholding my own pay for three weeks. It was the right thing to do. Luckily, it all worked out and the company was sold and most everyone stayed on. Those who didn’t, like myself, went on to find other work. The good news is, that I had people who I worked with stand up and refer me to positions in other companies. I literally had my choice of jobs.
People could trust me to do what I said, follow through, and be of service. As I moved more into my “real” work as a hypnotherapist & life coach many of these same people sent clients my way. It didn’t happen overnight but eventually if I was a good fit for a client or a friend those same people would eagerly share my name. I am thrilled to say that today most of my clients have come from a handful of such referrals. The best part is, because they are sent by a connection who really knows who I am and what I offer, they are more likely to have an instant rapport with me and the ripple effect continues. One client, in particular, sent enough clients, who sent even more clients, and filled my schedule for a year!
Additionally, as a practitioner of The Law of Attraction, I know how making honest connections helps to turbo charge positive change in one’s life. As I demonstrate in the video below from my online course for The POWER Plan, if you stay clear about your vision, open yourself to possibility, and take advantage of the synchronicity that follows you will be harnessing the power of your own connections and their ripple effects.
In the end the key is to remember, you may never really know who that one connection is who will start the ripple effect that catapults your business. In fact, you may be someone else’s ripple connection, too. The only thing I know for sure is being present and real in every interaction is the best way to ensure that you are connecting to people who will have the greatest impact on your life and business.
