As a Loan Officer and Business Director for MOXY Money, an all-female residential mortgage team, Makael McDonald was looking for meet-up groups and ways to meet new people when she found Women with Moxie. “It really appealed to me because it was an all women’s group (And it didn’t hurt that her company shared a similar name).”
But Makael also experienced what most of us do at one point or another – networking intimidation. “Networking is not my most comfortable place – being in a group of people that I don’t know is terrifying!” Networking can be a very scary thing. And not just for newbies – but even for seasoned veterans. You don’t know these people, you’re not sure what they’ll think of you, you’re not sure IF they’ll care enough to think about you and you just don’t know what the outcome is going to be. But as CEO of WWM, Dill Ward, always says “You are one introduction away from everything you want.” While the unknown can be very intimidating, there’s something so magical about not knowing what great things could come from just one connection that you make.
And that’s just what happened with Makael. After her first experience with WWM, she left feeling so great. She also realized that she knew WWM was a “safe space” and that was one of the driving factors to her becoming a member so quickly. “Everyone at Moxie is coming from a warm and welcoming place.” And because Makael knows what it feels like to be in that position of not knowing what to expect, she tends to look for people who are new and form a connection with them. Which is exactly what Moxie is all about!
One of her biggest frustrations is when someone meets you for the first time and immediately asks “What do you do?,” which is extremely common. “I don’t like it because it defines a person by how they make their money.” Instead, Makael likes to ask “What are you passionate about?” or “How do you like to spend your time?” Because then they get to choose what part of themselves they want to share with you. “Asking questions like this allows you to get more information about someone and most people respond well to that, often times saying “oooh, I like that!,” which is great!”
And that’s the type of environment Moxie strives to cultivate. We want everyone to feel that Moxie is that “safe space” for them to inspire and motivate and learn from others. And if anything, a place where you can meet other empowered business women who can bring some joy to your life. And it’s those connections that we form that keep these amazing women staying involved in Moxie, often times introducing other amazing women to the network as well.
One thing that Makael says sets Moxie apart from other networks is that she’s been able to meet more people and have more content-rich conversations. “At Moxie, you know there’s a genuine heartfelt interest overall in getting to know other people. There are deeper conversations had here than most other places. Women at Moxie think about networking from a personal perspective.”
Since becoming a member of WWM, Makael now has a greater comfort in networking and finds there being much more ease in talking about the work that she does and things she wants to do. Through Moxie, she’s formed some amazing connections with some really great women – some that she works with and does business with today.
This year Makael has taken on the challenge of taking herself out and putting herself out there to grow her network and Moxie has helped her prepare for that. “There’s no other networking organization that’s allowed me to come away with a handful of significant, amazing friendships, which is a bonus on top of sharing what you do and who you are. – I don’t think of them as networking connections, I think of them as a friends. Moxie has allowed us to form these relationships with it’s open-hearted, caring, energy-filled space. And that’s very uncommon!”
And that’s what Makael loves most about Moxie, because “true networking is a shared interest and really connecting with other women on multiple levels.” And we couldn’t agree more!
